Steady or flashing. It matters.

This is the one piece of car knowledge we wish every driver had, so here it is with nothing attached to it. A steady check engine light means the car has recorded a fault and wants it looked at. A flashing one means an engine misfire is dumping raw fuel into the exhaust, and that will destroy a catalytic converter in a matter of miles.

What it usually turns out to be

On a steady light with no symptoms, very often the fuel cap or the evaporative system: a seal, a valve, a cracked line. It is one of the cheapest things on this list and it is also the most common reason a car fails emissions. Colorado testing reads that system directly.

Inside the bay: a minivan up on a two-post lift with its hood raised, and a technician leaning into the engine bay with a tool in his hand.

How you’d know

Flashing, and the car is shaking

Pull over when it is safe and call us. Driving it is the expensive choice.

Steady, and the car drives normally

Make an appointment this week. It is recording something.

It came on after a fill-up

Check the cap is on tight and clicked. Sometimes that is genuinely the whole thing.

It went off by itself

The fault stopped meeting its trigger condition. It is still stored, and we can still read it.

Emissions test coming up

Bring it before the test, not after. A light on is an automatic fail.

What we do

Read and record every stored and pending code

Freeze-frame data: the conditions the car was in when the fault set

Test the named circuit before touching a part

Evaporative and vacuum smoke testing

Clear and verify. We road-test it so the monitors have a chance to run before it goes back to you

You get the number before the work starts, not after.

Bring it in.
