Not every bad shift is a bad transmission.

A transmission is the most expensive thing on most cars to replace, which makes it the easiest thing in the world to be sold one you didn’t need. So it gets tested first: fluid condition, line pressure, solenoid function, and what the transmission module itself is reporting.

What it usually turns out to be

On a modern automatic, a shift complaint is frequently electronic or hydraulic rather than mechanical: a solenoid, a sensor, low or burnt fluid, a wiring fault. Those are repairs. A worn clutch pack is a rebuild. Which one you have is a testable question, and it should be answered before anyone quotes you a transmission.

Inside the bay at 3596 Moline Street: a classic Volkswagen bus raised on a two-post lift with its rear engine lid open, and a technician crouched behind it working on the engine.

How you’d know

The engine revs but the car doesn’t accelerate with it

Slipping. Get it looked at soon. Driving a slipping transmission is what turns a repair into a replacement.

A hard bang between gears

Could be pressure, could be a solenoid, could be a mount. Three very different bills.

It hesitates for a second before it moves

Often fluid or pressure related, especially when cold.

A burnt smell

Fluid is overheating. Stop and call.

It won’t come out of one gear

Limp mode. The module has protected itself. The code it stored will tell us why.

What we do

Fluid level, color and smell: the first three things, and they are free to check

Line pressure testing

Transmission module scan, live data and adaptive values

Solenoids, sensors, wiring and mounts

Services, repairs and replacements, and a straight answer about which one is worth doing on a car of that age

You get the number before the work starts, not after.
